MYTH: Fats don’t make you fat!

Forget everything you know (or thought you knew) about fats, because contrary to popular belief, these little guys are an important part of a healthy diet. Not only do they improve the texture and taste of foods, healthy fats are packed full of beneficial nutrients that are essential for daily living.

1. What are Omega Fatty Acids?

Omega Fatty Acids ("Omegas") are an essential fat that the body needs to support a number of daily functions, such as providing energy and helping keep your brain, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and immune system working optimally. There are three types of Omegas: Omega-3, -6 and -9, of which the most important is the magical Omega-3.

Omega-3 is a type of polyunsaturated fat most famously known for providing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with play a key role in many important factors of health.

2. Why are they so important?

Healthy fats are critical for a number of factors, such as:

  • Cell Growth
  • Long-Term Energy
  • Vitamin Absorption
  • Cognitive Function
  • Hormone Production
  • Supporting Inflammation [1].

According to the National Library of Medicine, studies have even proven that Omega-3 fatty acids may further protect against cognitive decline with advancing age [2].

    3. Where does it come from?

The body cannot make Omega-3s on its own thereby earning them the title of "essential fatty acids", fatty acids that must be obtained in the diet and from outside sources. There are a variety of food sources that contain Omega-3, such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, anchovies), walnuts, flax seeds, and even eggs.

And while most believe that these are enough to provide the body with the essential fats it needs, the truth is that food sources alone fail to deliver adequate amounts necessary for optimal wellbeing.
