Fats don’t make you fat!

Forget everything you know (or thought you knew) about fats, because contrary to popular belief, these little guys are an important part of a healthy diet. Not only do they improve the texture and taste of foods, healthy fats are packed full of beneficial nutrients that are essential for daily living. But before we dive into the benefits, we first need to answer two simple questions: What are fatty acids and why do we need them?

What are Omega Fatty Acids?

Omega-3 is a type of polyunsaturated fat, meaning that it contains more than one double bond in its backbone. There are eleven different types of Omega-3, and two of which are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both EPA and DHA deliver their own unique benefits and are a necessity for optimal health.

Why are they so important?

Healthy fats are critical for a number of factors such as supporting necessary cell growth, protecting your organs and providing long-term energy. They even serve as a key mechanism for keeping your body warm! Plus, Omega-3s assist with vitamin absorption, cognitive function, hormone production, and help to fight inflammation [1]. According to the National Library of Medicine, studies have proven that Omega-3 fatty acids may further protect against cognitive decline with advancing age [2]. 

Where do Omega-3s come from? 

Omega-3s are considered ‘Essential Fatty Acids’, because unfortunately our bodies cannot make them  on their own and instead must be obtained through outside sources. Omega-3s are found in a variety of foods such as walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseed, even eggs! They are also found in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna, lake trout, mackerel, and anchovies. 

Are food sources enough?
